Susan M. Coler co-presented a session titled “Attacking Releases and Waivers – A Plaintiff’s Perspective” for the 2007 Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute at Saint Paul RiverCentre. The presentation addressed recent cases challenging the validity of releases of discrimination claims. This is a “hot topic” in legal circles because many releases previously considered “standard” may be found invalid.

Titled “Rethinking Remedies: Effective Approaches to Changing a Discriminatory Workplace,” panelists Frank Dobbins, Ph.D. from Harvard University and Lauren B. Edelman, Ph.D., J.D. from U.C. Berkeley discussed new research about what kinds of injunctive relief are most effective in increasing workplace diversity and how courts view corporate diversity efforts.

Sprenger served as a speaker and panelist at the 17th Annual Convention of the National Employment Lawyers Association, "Bridging the Divide: Strategies for Fairness in the Workplace" at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. Mr. Sprenger spoke at the plenary session on June 24, 2006. He discussed strategic and practical "lessons learned from hard fought battles," including his own employment class action and multi-party litigation rules for plaintiffs' counsel developed over 40 years of litigation practice.

The presentation focused on the effective use of experts in class and collective actions and strategies for undermining defense experts.

Steven M. Sprenger appeared on TF1's evening news broadcast as an interviewee discussing the purpose and benefits of class-action litigation. In light of possible class-action lawsuits being faced by France's three largest telephone companies, many in France are wanting to know more about the concept of class-action litigation.

"North Country" premiered -- a movie inspired by Jenson v. Eveleth Taconite Co., the first sexual harassment class action litigated in the United States. Sprenger + Lang represented the plaintiffs and class in this hard-fought litigation that took over ten years to get substantial relief for the women.

Henderson served as panelists for and attended the national conference “Impact Litigation: Representing Workers in Class, Collective & Multiple Plaintiff Actions,” sponsored by the National Employment Lawyers Association at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In the panel titled “Handling Class Actions Under the ADEA,” Coler discussed the use of releases in reductions in force and unique challenges for statistical analysis in age cases. Lieder presented an overview of ERISA class action issues in “Handling Class Actions under ERISA.” As a panel member in the session on “The ‘Named Plaintiff’ & Multiple Plaintiffs Issues,” Henderson addressed ethical and legal issues in selecting named plaintiffs for class cases.

Susan M. Coler presented the plaintiffs’ perspective on two panels for the 22nd Annual Upper Midwest Employment Law Institute at Saint Paul RiverCentre. In a session titled “Advanced Trial Practice: Keys to Bringing or Defending Baby Boomer Age Discrimination Claims,” Coler discussed statistics, litigation strategies, use of releases and the recent United States Supreme Court decision allowing disparate impact claims in federal age cases as a member of a panel of practitioners from across the U.S. She also fielded questions, along with other practitioners, in the session “Plaintiff Litigation – A Planning, Strategies and Tactics Open Forum.”
