Race Discrimination in Employment
Settled in 1999 for $8 million
Informally called the AMTRAK Management Race Discrimination Litigation, this race discrimination class action settled for $8 million and sweeping injunctive relief. The class consists of all African-American managers at Amtrak and all African-American management applicants at Amtrak between January 1, 1995 and September 30, 1999. A four-year Consent Decree spells out the injunctive provisions including protections for black employees related to hiring, promotions, pay, performance appraisals, training, and discipline, among other things. The Decree also establishes standards for Amtrak's newly created Business Diversity Office.
