Other DiscriminationBesides race, gender and age, federal employment discrimination law protects persons who are treated unfairly on the basis of their religion, disability, color or national origin. "Color" refers to discrimination based on the color of a person's skin regardless of race. "National origin" refers to discrimination based on a person's place of origin (such as Mexico, Somalia or Saudi Arabia) or on the physical, cultural or linguistic characteristics of a national origin group. States may have laws protecting other persons. For example, Minnesota laws prohibit employment discrimination on the basis of marital status, sexual orientation and status with regard to public assistance. These cases are proved like any other discrimination case. Protected class members show, through personal anecdotes, statistics, documents, experts and other witness testimony, that their employer is treating them differently than persons not in the class.
